LFA RESOLUTION

Resolved: State and/or federal election law should be

comprehensively reformed in the United States.

This year LFA students (and coaches) have the opportunity to dive into the topic of election reform. What better time to do it! Currently, the United States is in-between election cycles, providing for a less heated atmosphere. At the same time, we are coming off a season of election controversy which has caused both sides of the political aisle to rethink our election practices. Turning on the news, it may seem like only Republicans are up in arms about voting issues. However, Democrats are equally impassioned. Much discussion and legislation proposed by Democrats (such as the recent H.R. 1) would make significant changes to our election process. The discussion of this topic will prove educational in many ways.

You will notice that no actor is named in the resolution. This opens up the opportunity for students to look not only at federal election law but also state law. Should voter ID be required? What about rules governing absentee balloting? Is the electoral college a good idea? Who should draw the state district lines? How should the lines be determined? Was the 17th amendment a good idea? Should there be limits on campaign contributions? Debaters can also study bumps in the electoral road such as voter fraud and foreign meddling in elections.

The possibilities for growth in understanding our election process and its challenges abound. Buckle up as we leave transportation policy in the rear view mirror and prepare to hear the debaters campaign for their unique election law reform.
